TROLLS

We collaborated closely with DreamWorks on this graphics-intensive stereoscopic trailer edited by our friends at Transit. The opening sequence was a single shot centered around a multi-story tower of Troll hair, which our designers developed with significant creative direction from the Trolls feature team.

The CG main title that we created served as the environment for the balance of the trailer. Working with character and camera animation from DreamWorks, we integrated the characters into the Trolls letterforms, adding shadows and foot displacements into the fur of the letter texture.

Hair pipeline.

To construct the “hair tower,” we used a variety of tools in Maya and Cinema 4D, developing a highly customizable system that allowed us to quickly address DreamWorks’ creative direction. We created procedural tools for controlling the loop, twist, kink, and clump of the hair, and blended the end of our CG hair into the Troll hair from the first shot in the teaser.

Look development.

A combination of hair systems, displacement maps and scanned felt textures were utilized to develop a soft and fuzzy material that matched the art direction of the feature.
